The pots from Mata Ortiz are formed by only the potter's hands; No pottery wheels are used. The natural clay is found locally as are the mineral pigments for the paint. Each piece is signed by the artist. Mata Ortiz pottery began as a revival of ancient traditions in the 1970s, but has since developed a distinctive artistic style all it's own.
